Hans Holbein the Younger (1497- 1543)

Holbein was a German artist who became the court painter for Henry VIII. He was known for his very precise likenesses. `The Ambassadors` ( can be seen at the Tate) has many symbolic references, including the strange distorted skull. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Holbein_the_Younger
